Gastroschisis Photo Sessions – Child Photographer

Newborn charity photo session

As some of you may already know, my child was born on April 9th 2013 with a condition called gastroschisis. In short gastroschisis is a condition that occurs in utero, the baby’s tummy does not fully develop causing a small or large opening and allowing the baby’s intestines or bowel (sometimes more) to be outside of his/her tummy. These babies are usually born early and all of them will have one surgery to place things back inside of their tummies and close the opening…some kiddos have had as many as 7 surgeries in their first two years of life.

I found out my child would have this condition when I was 21 weeks pregnant and I began planning a big charity and awareness project to help take my mind off of all of the worries that come with the territory and bring joy to other children’s lives.

I have been working on creating a photo book and calendars comprised of whimsical and inspirational photos of babies and kiddos whom have all been born with this condition. My hope is that these photos will help raise awareness and create inspiration in others. The majority of the proceeds will be donated to Avery’s Angels Gastroschisis Foundation for helping families in need and finding a cause.

I have big plans for these photo sessions, that’s right not one of these sessions is going to be a “normal” no fun session that requires a bunch of stiff and boring posing for the camera. These sessions are created first with the child in mind and are meant to be fun and creative. Think lots of balloons, bubbles, whimsical outdoor set-ups and cute props for boys and girls. In the future, with donations, I hope to be able to make these sessions a bit more extravagant and provide the child with their dream photography session, for example, take the child to a ranch with horses to photograph or another place they have always wanted to go. For now these photography sessions will be held in Colorado. In the late summer they will be held in Washington State in and around the Seattle area.

If you currently reside in Colorado and would like to schedule a free photo session for your child please contact Amanda Glisson Photography via e-mail glissonamanda@gmail.com to schedule your session for late spring/early summer of 2013. If you currently reside in Washington state and would like to schedule a free session for your baby or child in or around the Seattle area after June of 2013 please contact me via e-mail glissonamanda@gmail.com. Thank you and warm wishes from Amanda.

Sebastian’s Journey with Gastroschisis – My Son’s Story

Childbirth photographer

This is a very special blog for a very special little guy. His name is Sebastian, he is my son, born April 9th 2013 with gastroschisis. His condition prevented his stomach wall from fully forming in utero, causing his intestines to be on the outside of his tummy and resulting in surgery after birth. That is the briefest of descriptions for gastroschisis but it’s a start as there is lots more involved. Right now I would like to concentrate on celebrating and documenting Sebastians first week of life!

Sebastian is doing wonderful! My husband and I are staying in the NICU at Children’s Hospital with him until he fully recovers. He had surgery one hour after birth to place his intestines where they belong (inside his tummy of course!) the docs say the surgery went great and his intestines looked beautiful, no future surgeries are predicted! He had his oxygen on for the first two days due to his early planned delivery at 36 weeks. Best news is Sebastian is, as of Friday, POOPING!!! I know this might sound sort of funny to a lot of moms and dads but babies with gastroschisis have to learn to use their intestines/bowel and often times take a while to start pooping, this is such a good sign for him! We are still waiting until he grows strong enough to start eating (right now he is on lipids and other nutrients until his body can handle milk). It is hard to watch my baby in the NICU and watch him cry because he is hungry and not be able to feed him. It is hard when there are setbacks. Just yesterday I informed his doctor and surgeon that he was spitting up a lot and had trouble breathing as a result. The surgeon ordered an x-ray on Sebastian and we found out that his G-Tube (a tube inserted into his stomach through his mouth or nose to drain any excess acid sitting in his tummy) was actually sitting in his esophagus, not his stomach!  I have been learning to take things one day at a time and I am very thankful I get to stay here to keep an eye on him. My daughters are spending some much needed time with family and I am missing them already. I will be adding photos and little journals to this blog as time passes to document Sebastians journey, he’s me little hero, my miracle baby.

Yes this photo is a bit graphic, but he's my little guy and I love him, every part! These are his intestines wrapped up in gauze right after birth and before surgery. Thank you to my wonderful husband for taking these first few photos right after birth!

Easter Fun in the Sun – Children’s Photography

Washington childrens photography

This Easter I thought it would be fun to include some new props in a routine Easter session I had planned for my three little girls. We had a blast making the crowns you see in some of the images; I cut the lace and the girls painted the fabric their metallic color of choice! I love these images, they really show off the affection my daughters have for one another. Happy Easter!

Maternity Photography – Elissa and Dan

Classic Maternity photo

Elissa and Dan are expecting their first child in October (just a few weeks away!). This photo session was taken in Peyton near their home and it was super easy to get some awesome shots of them expecting and in love. I had so much fun hanging out with them and I can’t wait to take some cool newborn photos and capture their first memories as a family next month! Congrats!

Heather’s Maternity Photos

beautiful pregnancy photo

Heather poses both outside and inside her home as we chit chat and joke for a few hours about relationships, motherhood, and…work! She is ready to be a mom of her little boy expected any day now. (can’t wait to see the little cutie!) She has already documented quite a bit in her baby book which I must admit I had neglected to do for all three of my girls! Take a look at this mom-to-be’s maternity photos, isn’t she beautiful?
